With this title, you're probably thinking about what the hell these two characters could possibly have in common. Well, the answer is not quite as dirty as you would think! (Although... nevermind. Moving on.)
The characters are actually not that important. It's the actor and actress behind them. Emma Watson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are incredibly gifted with acting, but they are also creative, intelligent, and active individuals using their influence to make a positive difference in the world.
If you are reading this, you have internet and you have probably seen Emma Watson's kick ass speech on feminism. However, just in case:

CAN WE PLEASE TALK ABOUT HOW FREAKING COOL THIS IS???????????????????????
(Yes, the caps lock and many question marks were necessary.)
Emma Watson nailed it. The word "feminism" makes so many people freak out, but what does it really mean? What does it mean to be a feminist?
This leads us to a video from the one and only Joseph Gordon-Levitt. In case you haven't heard, he owns a pretty awesome website called HitRecord and it has been televised into an entirely beautiful variety of art and expression. Let's take a moment to hear from him:

Yet again, I agree.
Feminism is not about women standing up to men or women defeating the patriarchal society. Feminism is about women and men eliminating the patriarchal society. Women are not allowed to come across as "manly" and men are not allowed to come across as "feminine" and it has to STOP.
There is another problem with men having to prove their manliness in our society. Men are told they have to be aggressive, they can't take no for an answer, and if they are being proper men, women fall over themselves and absolutely want them. What is the problem with this?
*drum roll*
Two words....
*increasing drum roll*
RAPE CULTURE.
That's right. This isn't some imaginary concept some "feminists" put up on a drawing board. Rape culture is real and is a direct result of social inequality among the sexes. Men feel they constantly have to assert their power and rape is not about sex. It's about POWER and CONTROL.
Let's go back to Emma for a second. Check this out:
"If men don't have to be aggressive in order to be accepted, women won't feel compelled to be submissive. If men don't have to control, women won't have to be controlled."
BOOM.
Gender inequality not only restricts and limits the women, but it limits the men, too. Every person on this planet can be limited by that stupid label so many mistake for gender. Look, it does not matter what physical body you are born into. You should not have to think twice before doing something simply because you may be mistaken for the other gender. How ridiculous is that?
As the two brilliant stars above have stated and I have interpreted, feminism is about believing that you can do what you want to do in life without being judged for it because you are a man or a woman. Feminism is fighting to get rid of that nasty idea that a woman only wants to be a mother. It eliminates the idea that a man would never want to design dresses. Working together as feminists means everyone has the right to be strong, sensitive, and loving. It has nothing to do with hating men. It is about total gender equality. Total gender equality is not just about boys and girls, either. There is a whole spectrum out there and we are lucky enough to live in a world where humanity can come to terms with feelings that would have gotten them killed or tortured as little as thirty or forty years ago. Let's take advantage and enjoy this open-minded place.
As usual, please give me your comments and opinions. Let's hear it, baby. :-)
